The FE Exam: Disciplines, Exam Day, and How It Is Scored
You sit the Fundamentals of Engineering exam once, near the end of a degree, so there is no second chance to learn how the day works. This guide covers the seven discipline exams, test day itself, how NCEES reports your result, and the two tools you get on screen.
What the FE is, and who takes it
NCEES writes and administers the FE, and describes it as "generally your first step in the process of becoming a licensed professional engineer (P.E.)", "designed for recent graduates and students who are close to finishing an undergraduate engineering degree from an EAC/ABET-accredited program" (ncees.org/engineering/fe, read 2026-08-09). It is computer-based, offered year-round at Pearson test centers, and uses both SI and USCS units.
The fee is $225 payable directly to NCEES, more if you register through a foreign entity. You get one attempt per testing window and no more than three in any 12-month period, and the windows are quarterly: January to March, April to June, July to September, October to December. Some licensing boards are stricter, so check yours.

Pick the exam whose knowledge areas match the courses you actually took, not the job you hope to hold. FE Other Disciplines is the general engineering paper, the honest choice when your program spans fields or none of the six named exams fits your coursework. Broad is not the same as easy: its heaviest single area is Fluid Mechanics, at 12 to 18 of the 110 questions.
The mathematics differs more than people expect. FE Civil and FE Industrial and Systems list calculus but no differential equations, while the other five do. Read your two candidates side by side on the NCEES FE exam page. Each names every knowledge area with the number of questions drawn from it, as a range of questions and never a percentage, so treat a single percentage per area as somebody's arithmetic.
What test day actually looks like
The NCEES FE page lists the appointment as 6 hours. Its Examinee Guide breaks it into a 2-minute nondisclosure agreement, an 8-minute tutorial, 5 hours 20 minutes of exam time and a 25-minute scheduled break, which comes to 5 hours 55 minutes. Plan around the longer figure. Declining the agreement ends the exam and forfeits your appointment and fees, so read it before the day.
The exam is 110 questions in 320 minutes and you get the whole clock at the start, with no individually timed section. What surprises people is that it arrives in two halves: after roughly half the questions you are prompted to review and submit them, and once you submit, those questions are gone. Flag and revisit freely inside a half, never across the break.
The break falls at that halfway point. Unused break time does not extend the exam clock, which restarts by itself when the break expires, and an unscheduled break comes out of your testing time. One more thing: not all 110 questions count, because NCEES includes a limited number of unscored pretest items, placed at random and not identifiable.
Pass, fail, and the diagnostic report
NCEES is direct: "All results are reported as pass or fail." Fail and you also receive a diagnostic report showing your performance for each major topic. Pass and that is the whole result. Results are typically available within 7 to 10 business days, with an email pointing you to your MyNCEES account.
Your result is the total number of correct answers, with no deductions for wrong ones, so answer everything. That raw score is converted to a scaled score, and NCEES does not publish the passing score. None of it is published: no scale, no cut score and no percentage to aim at. Anyone quoting you a specific FE passing score is guessing.
The two tools on screen
The FE is closed book with an electronic reference. The FE Reference Handbook is supplied on screen as a searchable PDF, and you test on a 24-inch monitor so the question and the handbook sit side by side. You search from the box in the reference pane, and Ctrl and F is not available. Download the free copy from your MyNCEES dashboard and study with it open from week one: it bounds the equations any question can assume, so knowing where a relation lives matters as much as knowing it exists.
Calculators are a short list that NCEES reviews every year. For 2026 it permits all Casio fx-115 and fx-991 models, the HP 33s and HP 35s but no other HP, and all TI-30X and TI-36X models, none of them graphing. A TI-30XS is also available on screen. Bring your calculator without its cover.
The question types, including the unfamiliar ones
Most FE questions are traditional multiple choice with a single correct answer. NCEES also uses four alternative item types, in its own words:
- Multiple correct options: allows multiple choices to be correct.
- Fill in the blank: provides a space for examinees to enter a numerical response to the question.
- Point and click: requires examinees to click on part of a graphic to answer.
- Drag and drop: requires examinees to click on and drag items to match, sort, rank, or label.
All of them, including the alternative types, are scored correct or incorrect with no partial credit. On a multiple correct question, getting all but one of the correct options earns exactly what a blank earns. That is also why the 8-minute tutorial is worth using rather than clicking through.
How to prepare, honestly
- Work from the specification. It names every knowledge area and how many of the 110 questions come from it. That is your study plan, already written.
- Practice with the handbook open, always. Looking a relation up quickly is a skill, and the exam tests it alongside the engineering.
- Rehearse the clock and the halfway submit. 320 minutes over 110 questions is just under three minutes each, and the first half does not come back.
